Federico Bonazzoli replied to Mattia Destro, but a point apiece just pushes both Genoa and Salernitana closer to relegation.

Serie A Highlights: Genoa 1-1 Salernitana

This was a massive relegation dogfight between the bottom two, who were increasingly cut off from the rest of the league. The Grifone were under their third coach of the campaign and had only one win, all the way back in September, while Salernitana were in an even worse state at rock bottom.

Mattia Bani was injured and Leo Ostigard suspended, while the visitors made the trip without Mamadou Coulibaly, Matteo Ruggeri and Andrea Schiavone.

Genoa went close early on, Manolo Portanova just failing to get on the end of a Caleb Ekuban roll across from six yards.

The deadlock was broken with an almost identical move, as this time Mattia Destro made the right run to the near post and got on the end of the Ekuban assist.

Destro came so close to a second when he did everything right except the finish, firing straight at the goalkeeper.

It proved costly, as Salernitana equalised moments later, Milan Djuric nodding back a cross at the by-line for Federico Bonazzoli to fire in from close range.

Destro protested, as he got a shot away and forced a save despite being pulled back by Radu Dragusin, but penalty appeals were waved away.

Genoa could not have gone closer, as Milan Badelj’s effort was deflected onto the base of the upright after a free kick.

Even Diego Perotti came on for Salernitana against his old club and saw his shot smothered, but the point apiece does nothing to please anyone.
