Frosinone completed the most incredible comeback from 2-0 down to beat Sassuolo 4-2 in a dramatic game, which also saw desperate stoppage-time saves and the woodwork rattled at both ends.
Eusebio Di Francesco faced his former club after a promising start to the season. The Neroverdi lost goalkeeper Andrea Consigli to a knock in training, joining Agustin Alvarez on the sidelines, but it was no coincidence they got their first points of the campaign once Domenico Berardi was available.
It was a very aggressive Sassuolo start, as Boloca saw a strike charged down when clear on goal, then Nedim Bajrami tested the goalkeeper with a ferocious curler from distance.
It paid off with a well-worked goal, including Matias Vina’s slide-rule pass for Andrea Pinamonti to sweep in with the inside of the right boot across Stefano Turati into the far bottom corner.
Vina was also decisive at the other end with a crucial interception to prevent Matias Soule tapping in the Riccardo Marchizza cross at the back post.
Pinamonti doubled both his tally and Sassuolo’s lead, as Jeremy Toljan’s cross was allowed to bounce and he thumped a great half-volley from the edge of the penalty area.
Alessio Cragno made a great one-handed reaction save on Walid Cheddira’s header from the Martin Erlic cross, while Domenico Berardi tested Turati with his angled drive at the near post.
Ruan Tressoldi hauled back Cheddira from six yards as a ball flashed across the face of goal and a penalty was awarded after the VAR on-field review. Cheddira converted it himself, rolling slowly into the near bottom corner for his debut Serie A goal.
Marchizza fired over from distance and Cheddira had more penalty appeals when trying to run onto a through ball, but this time Ruan Tressoldi appeared to stay just on the right side of using his body to shield the ball rather than pulling back the player.
Frosinone completed the comeback from 2-0 down for 2-2 with another great volley, this time from Luca Mazzitelli from the edge of the box on a Soule corner.
It wasn’t over, as five minutes later they turned it around completely. Mazzitelli saw the first attempt charged down, then was quickest to react on the rebound from 10 yards.
The Canarini kept going and it was almost 4-2 when Matias Soule’s scorcher smashed against the upright.
However, going into eight minutes of stoppages, Sassuolo suddenly woke back up for a chaotic end-to-end match. Samu Castillejo on his debut for the Neroverdi saw an angled drive parried, then Garritano clipped the crossbar from a tricky angle after winning back the ball from Ruan Tressoldi.
Moments later, an astonishing fingertip save from Turati prevented the Matheus Henrique header from going in under the bar.
It proved decisive, because with Sassuolo sending everyone up for a corner, they were caught on the counter for the 4-2 goal. Cheddira started the run from his own half and drew Cragno out, generously rolling across for Pol Lirola to tap into an empty net against his old club.
