Lucas Beltran finally got his first Serie A goal and Riccardo Sottil scored a stunning curler as Fiorentina flattened Salernitana.
The Viola were fresh from qualifying for the Conference League knockouts by beating Genk 2-1 on Thursday, with Dodo and Gaetano Castrovilli the only long-term absentees. Pippo Inzaghi’s side got their first win of the season against Lazio, with Boulaye Dia back on the bench, but Guillermo Ochoa was still injured and Norbert Gyomber laid out by flu.
Beltran’s back-heel flick sent Arthur Melo through, where he was brought down by a clumsy Lorenzo Pirola challenge. Beltran converted the penalty himself to finally get his first Serie A goal.
It was almost 2-0 moments later, Benoit Costil with a desperate reaction save on the deflected Jonathan Ikone header from close range.
Costil also flew to fingertip an Alfred Duncan curler out from under the crossbar, but could do absolutely nothing on the magnificent finish from Riccardo Sottil. The right-foot curler was so precise that it clipped both the underside of the bar and the inside of the far post at the top corner.
Salernitana thought they had to get one back within two minutes of the restart, but somehow Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi’s header into the ground from six yards on a Pasquale Mazzocchi cross bounced up and off the crossbar.
Ikone’s strike was beaten away by Costil, who also got a trailing foot to the Arthur daisy-cutter, but Fiorentina added a third when Duncan won it back in midfield, Sottil pulled back from the by-line beyond Arthur, finding Giacomo Bonaventura to sweep home.
Pietro Terracciano kept the clean sheet with a fine save on Bradaric’s strike that was flying under the bar.
Fiorentina 3-0 Salernitana
