Serie A Highlights: Fiorentina 1-0 Venezia

The Viola continued to dream of European football after their 3-2 victory away to Napoli, though Giacomo Bonaventura was still out of action. As for the Lagunari, they were increasingly desperate in the drop zone and with a long absentee list, including Sergio Romero, Antonio Vacca, Arnor Sigurdsson, Michael Cuisance and suspended Ethan Ampadu.

Jonathan Ikone got his first goal for the Viola last week and came very close to a second on 17 minutes when he combined with Lucas Torreira to shoot from a tight angle, finding the inside of the far post, then the chaotic move continued with Gaetano Castrovilli and Nico Gonzalez unable to finish it.

It was one-way traffic at the Stadio Franchi, Niki Maenpaa rushing out to close down Arthur Cabral, then the striker’s bicycle kick went over the bar.

Fiorentina’s dominance finally paid off with a chaotic goal. Igor acrobatically hooked a free kick back from the far post, it ricocheted around in a sea of legs until Lucas Torreira bundled over the line.

Youssef Maleh’s header was over the bar, while Nico Gonzalez couldn’t then control his volleyed cross.

It was a more even second 45 minutes, with Venezia even attempting a foray forward, although Thomas Henry was well offside when trying to reach the David Okereke cross at the back post.

Henry had another attempt charged down, while Castrovilli was stretchered off as his knee appeared to buckle.

Mattia Caldara was offside when his header bounced off the upright and probably fouled Pietro Terracciano too.
