Serie A | Fiorentina 1-0 Atalanta: Kean confirms remarkable form

Moise Kean pounced on a defensive error to give Fiorentina a morale-boosting victory over Atalanta, as the race for Europe keeps getting tighter.

The Viola were fresh off a 3-0 victory over Juventus, but Robin Gosens joined Andrea Colpani on the absentee list. La Dea saw their Scudetto hopes evaporate in defeat to Inter, but Mateo Retegui shook off a muscular problem to start, with Ederson suspended, Juan Cuadrado only fit for the bench, Stefan Posch, Odilon Kossounou, Giorgio Scalvini and Gianluca Scamacca injured. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini also sat out a touchline ban.

Kean drilled wide after robbing Marten de Roon in midfield, but at the other end Retegui’s smart pass sent Davide Zappacosta down the left to roll across, Ademola Lookman’s tap-in denied by a desperate Luca Ranieri block.

Ranieri was also decisive when intercepting a Raoul Bellanova assist for Lookman, then charged down the Charles De Ketelaere strike after defensive bodies blocked off Retegui.

Instead, Fiorentina took the lead with a goal created out of nowhere by on-form Kean. He spotted the weak Isak Hien first touch inside the centre-circle and pounced, sprinting halfway up the pitch to beat Marco Carnesecchi with a precise angled drive.

Albert Gudmundsson’s lob was over the bar when sent through by Rolando Mandragora’s pass, then Carnesecchi got down for a tough one-handed save on Fagioli’s right-foot curler from the edge of the area.

Fagioli charged down the Mario Pasalic scorcher and Carnesecchi was alert to clear as Kean pounced on another defensive error.

Kean also fired over the bar from a Dodo counter-attack, while De Ketelaere’s angled drive was inches wide of the far post on a Pasalic assist.

Fiorentina really should’ve gone 2-0 up on an inspired Lucas Beltran assist on 73 minutes, but twice he prodded the ball straight at Carnesecchi for a desperate double save.

Nonetheless, Atalanta fell to their first away defeat in Serie A for seven months.
