Hirving Lozano missed a sitter set up by Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and there was a tough save on Giacomo Raspadori, as Fiorentina held Napoli to a goalless draw.

The Partenopei had won both matches coming into Week 3, scoring nine goals and conceding two, with confidence sky high for Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen. The Viola were also boosted by Thursday’s 2-1 aggregate win over FC Twente that qualified them for the Conference League, but gave new buy Antonin Barak a surprise start. Gaetano Castrovilli and Diego Demme were long-term absentees.

Watch the highlights here.

Nikola Milenkovic made a crucial block from six yards to stop Osimhen scoring on the Piotr Zielinski pull-back, then Dodo prevented Kvicha Kvaratskhelia nodding in a Chucky Lozano cross at the back post.

There was a double Fiorentina chance on 24 minutes, as first Alex Meret spilled the Riccardo Sottil snapshot, then Giacomo Bonaventura’s follow-up was inches wide.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s header was deflected and Sottil was greedy with a scuffed finish when he should’ve chosen the pass.

Osimhen had the ball in the net on 43 minutes, but the offside flag was up after Pierluigi Gollini pushed a Zielinski cross into the path of Lozano and it came back to the striker. The Nigerian then almost pounced on a horrible Lucas Martinez Quarta back-pass, as the Viola had a moment of panic.

Lozano really should’ve put Napoli in front after the restart when found by a Kvaratskhelia cross at the back post, but incredibly turned the free header wide.

Meret smothered a Sottil angled drive and Giacomo Raspadori came off the bench for his Napoli debut after the move from Sassuolo.

Fiorentina had a huge chance when Jonathan Ikone sparked the counter-attack and Sottil released Barak, the ex-Verona man drilling inches wide of the near post.

Sottil placed his volley a bit too perfectly, as it was straight at Meret, but Pierluigi Gollini had to get down for a great one-handed save to palm Raspadori’s effort round the post from outside the box.

Zambo Anguissa needed a crucial sliding tackle on Riccardo Saponara after Tanguy Ndombele was caught in possession to spark a Fiorentina counter-attack. Ndombele looked very sluggish and off the pace, booked in stoppages for a late lunge on Youssouf Maleh.

Between Serie A and the Conference League, it is the third consecutive 0-0 draw for Fiorentina.

Fiorentina 0-0 Napoli

  1. Neutralize? They should’ve won. Fiorentina had much, much better chances.

I was interested in seeing Kvaratskhelia in action, but Dodo controlled him with a cigar between his lips all match.
