Fiorentina were one of the busiest clubs in Serie A in the transfer deadline day as La Viola sold Federico Chiesa to Juventus and brought to the Artemio Franchi three new faces, including former Napoli star José Maria Callejon.

Juventus' acquisition is clearly the most important signing in Serie A in the transfer deadline day. The 22-year-old has joined the Old Lady on a two-year loan deal with option to buy. Juve “will pay €3m for sporting season 2020/2021 and €7m for sporting season 2021/2022,” the club’s official statement reads.

“The obligation for Juventus to definitely acquire the player’s registrations rights, subject to the achievement of certain given sporting objectives by the end of the season 2021/2022;

“The right for Juventus to definitively acquire the player’s registration rights in case these given objectives are not achieved.

“In both cases, the agreed consideration for the definitive acquisition is € 40 million, payable in three years, which might be increased up to a maximum of € 10 milion upon achievement of further performance objectives over the duration of the employment contract with the player”.

Fiorentina fans did not take well Chiesa’s decision to leave the Franchi to join their fiercest rivals. They insulted their former player when he was on his way out of Florence’s Fanfani clinc in the afternoon.

La Viola, however, have brought in an important replacement in José Maria Callejon who has arrived at the club as a free agent. “I am happy to be here and I want to do well with this shirt,” the former Napoli star said after his medical today.

“I am Callejon not Chiesa, he is a very strong player and he will surely do well but I am here to bring happiness to my fans.”

The Tuscans have also secured the services of the promising Argentinean defender Lucas Martinez Quarta, 24, who has joined the club for €6m from River Plate.

Another remarkable signing of the deadline day in Serie A is Napoli’s acquisition of Tiemoue Bakayoko who joins the San Paolo hierarchy on loan from Chelsea and reunites with his former manager Gennaro Gattuso. Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis welcomed him at the club with one of this trademark tweets: “Welcome Tiemoue,” he wrote shortly before Napoli’s official announcement.

Chris Smalling’s Roma return is also among the best signings of the day. The English defender returns to the Capital after a season-loan spell in the 2019/20 campaign. The Giallorossi pay €15m to sign the 30-year-old on a permanent deal.

Roma fans hold their breath for nearly one hour after the end of the deadline day as the Lega Calcio had not shown Smalling’s contract among those registered before 8 pm.

The official announcement of Manchester United and Roma arrived one hour later because the system of the Lega Calcio takes a little bit longer to register international signings. Roma had sent all the documentation needed before 8 pm and the player will land in the Capital tomorrow to take his first training session of the season under Paulo Fonseca who had been pushing to reunite with the former Red Devil.

Gerard Deulofeu marks another important return in Serie A as the former Milan man joins Udinese on loan from Watford.
