Sassuolo had taken the lead with a stunning Giorgos Kyriakopoulos volley, but Atalanta turned it all around through Mario Pasalic and Ademola Lookman on Brandon Soppy assists.

La Dea were still unbeaten and wanted to consolidate second place after the 2-2 draw with Udinese, but missed Juan Musso, Davide Zappacosta, Rafael Toloi and Duvan Zapata, plus suspended Hans Hateboer and Jose Luis Palomino. The Neroverdi welcomed back Domenico Berardi and Hamed Junior Traore to the bench after a lengthy lay-off, but Mert Muldur and Gregoire Defrel were still side-lined, losing summer signing Armand Laurienté to a knee problem at the last minute.

It was a special occasion in Bergamo, as next week Atalanta celebrate the 115th anniversary of their foundation.

Watch the highlights here.

Mario Pasalic carved the Sassuolo defence open thanks to a quick give-and-go with Ademola Lookman, but Andrea Consigli rushed out to parry.

Andrea Consigli made a save with his face on Joakim Maehle, although Lookman was offside in the build-up, then Caleb Okoli’s header into the ground bounced back over the bar.

Lookman had penalty appeals, but while Davide Frattesi did catch him, there was minimal contact.

Sassuolo broke the deadlock in real style with a stunning left-foot volley at the back post from Giorgos Kyriakopoulos, meeting the floated Luca D’Andrea cross from the right to smash into the roof of the net. That was the first time all season that Atalanta conceded before half-time.

Maehle’s curler skimmed the crossbar and moments later the hosts were back on level terms, as Consigli flapped at a pull-back from the by-line, Brandon Soppy kept his cool and picked the right pass for Pasalic to sweep home from eight yards.

Barely 20 seconds after the restart, Atalanta had turned it around. Soppy was involved again, making an immediate slide-rule forward pass, where Lookman shrugged off Martin Erlic and curled left-footed into the far top corner.

Domenico Berardi made his first appearance since August 30 and immediately made an impact, his ferocious left-foot strike bouncing off the underside of the bar.

Hamed Junior Traore also came on for his season debut, having fractured a metatarsal in July, but Berardi’s return did not last long, as he limped off again after just 22 minutes.

Rasmus Hojlund won back the ball in the box and was denied by a desperate Consigli save, while Matteo Ruggeri’s angled drive flashed just wide on the counter and Agustin Alvarez scuffed his finish into the arms of Marco Sportiello.

Atalanta 2-1 Sassuolo

Kyriakopoulos 41 (S), Pasalic 45 (A), Lookman 46 (A)
