Italy will become the first domestic league to start using semi-automatic offside technology later this month, while it will be debuted in the Italian Supercup between Milan and Inter.

The system was already in use in the Champions League this term and at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, proving a success to increase accuracy and reduce waiting times for VAR offside calls.

The Lega Serie A invested over €1m in purchasing the technology and installing it in their stadiums to further limit the number of errors and the lag from adjusting the lines manually.

It will begin in Serie A from the second half of the season, so the Week 20 fixtures, beginning with BolognaSpezia on Friday January 27.

Before that, the SAOT will be introduced in the Supercoppa Italiana when Milan and Inter face off in Riyadh on January 18.

There are an extra eight cameras positioned around each stadium, along with the existing ones for television stations, ensuring complete coverage of the field.

This will therefore eliminate the issue seen when Juventus had a goal incorrectly ruled offside against Salernitana because the cameras did not cover Antonio Candreva standing near the corner flag.

The artificial intelligence of the SAOT will constantly track 29 different points of the human body, including everything from the nose to the pinky toe.

It then provides a three-dimensional image of the players to show the audience at home beyond all reasonable doubt.

Serie A will become the first domestic league to use the semi-automatic offside technology regularly, just as it was the first to adopt VAR in 2017 and introduced goal line technology before anyone else.

“We confirm our intention to modernise Italian football,” said Lega Serie A chief Luigi De Siervo.
