New Roma midfielder Sergio Oliveira is surprised by the quality of the Giallorossi and hopes to return to Portugal national team thanks to his spell at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma signed Oliveira from Porto on loan with an option to buy for €13m.

The 29-year old held his first press conference as a Roma player today.

“I will learn Italian, but I will speak Portuguese today. I am 29, I’ve already proved my worth. I feel I can help Roma,” he said.

José Mourinho is accustomed to winning and working with important players and Roma have many. My favourite role is in a three-man midfield as a No.8 or I can play in a deeper position, in a two-man midfield.

“I like challenges, I am grateful to Porto for helping me reach these levels,” he continued.

“I was surprised by the quality of Roma players. Training facilities are excellent, I’ve been welcomed well and I thank everyone.

“I’ve been following Roma for a long time because of Tiago Pinto and Mourinho and I am on good terms with Pellegrini. I’ll feel even more at ease as time passes.

“The last season was the best one for me, personally and team-wise. I wanted a new challenge and I am not afraid to arrive on loan, I want to prove that I can stay here long term and the best way to do it is to win games.

“One of my targets is to return to the national team and the coach knows that. Portugal must win the first game and then we could face Italy, we have everything to play in the next World Cup.”
