Former Italy striker Aldo Serena believes that signing Dusan Vlahovic for €80m was wiser than getting Cristiano Ronaldo for more than €100m.

Vlahovic joined the Bianconeri from Fiorentina in the January transfer window and has already scored five goals in the opening 11 appearances with the Old Lady. Juventus invested €70m plus €10m add-ons in securing his services from Fiorentina.

“There are basic rules in football. The striker and the goalkeeper must be reliable,” Serena, a former Juventus striker, told Tuttosport newspaper.

“Vlahovic is not only strong, he has ample room for improvement. Morata is a great striker, but he wors for the team, he can’t have the responsibility of being the main centre forward.”

Vlahovic was the second-most prolific striker in 2021 after Robert Lewandowski. In his latest interview with GQ, Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri compared the Serbian forward with Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, calling them the best players of their generation.

So was it better to invest €80m to sin him than more than €100m for Ronaldo?

“Vlahovic is 22 and he can be helpful for many years. When Ronaldo joined Juventus he was already in his 30s and despite being a big professional and scoring many goals, he was already in the final part of his career when he arrived,” said Serena.

The Portuguese star scored 101 goals in 134 games during his three-year spell in Turin, where he won two Serie A titles, two Supercoppa and one Coppa Italia. In the summer, he returned to Manchester United for €15m plus €8m add-ons.

  1. Funny how articles about Ronaldo has to include insignificant Super Cups 🤣🤣🤣
Maybe to mask that he was in fact the least succesful player in their 9 in a row streak + Ronaldos last season

    Everybody else had more succes
    Dybala being the Jewel with
    5 Scudetti (in a row)
    4 Coppa Italia
    3 doubles (in a row)
    1 UCL final
    ? Supercups – who cares 🤣🤣🤣

    But also Tevez with
    2 Scudetti
    1 Coppa Italia
    1 UCL final
    ? Supercups – who cates 🤣🤣🤣

Tevez could like Dybala actually help Juve in Europe.
    Not like that failure Ronaldo.

  2. Well lets see this weekend if this so called star could bring something out of the game…did nothing well to get him team out of trouble against tough Torino, Atalanta nor Villareal

  3. In 7 seasons with Juventus Dybala only scored 4 ULC knock-out goals. Ronaldo scored 7 knock-out goals in his first two seasons. The whole team has failed during the past 4 seasons. Ronaldo was a remarkable signing at the time, but the truth is that many of the players in the team didn’t embrace the challenge of playing with him or simply weren’t good enough to do so. Dybala has more often than not flattered to deceive in the big UCL games, none more so than during the 2017 UCL Final when he wilted; his performance was pathetically weak and it’s not surprising other players were angry with him in the locker room. Personally, I’m glad we are moving in a different direction without the likes of Ronaldo & Dybala. Our management team are being ruthless and fiscally responsible and that’s what we need for the now and the future. We need more dynamic players with their best years ahead of them like Dybala was when we signed him in 2015.
