Former Italy striker Aldo Serena feels that Alvaro Morata’s experience will help him settle in at Milan but insists the Rossoneri’s ‘first option’ was Joshua Zirkzee.

Milan are on the verge of signing Alvaro Morata from Atletico Madrid by paying a €13m clause.

The Serie A giants are planning to finalise the deal this week so the Spain captain can join his new teammates and coach Paulo Fonseca straight after his holidays.

Former Inter, Juventus and Torino striker Serena gave his verdict on Morata during Monday’s Calciomercato Originale on Sky Sport Italia.

Ex-Italy striker opens up about Morata joining Milan and ‘first choice’ Zirkzee

“Morata is not the primary option because Zirkzee was the first choice and he didn’t join Milan for financial reasons,” said the former Italy international, as quoted by FcInter1908.

“However, I think Morata is expressing the best level of his football right now. He can also guide his teammates, and with his experience, he can settle in well at Milan.”

Milan had made Zirkzee their transfer priority but failed to reach an agreement with the Dutch striker’s agent, Kia Joorabchain, over commissions. The former Bologna forward has officially joined Manchester United.

Morata, 31, returns to Serie A after a four-year spell at Juventus. He first joined the Bianconeri in 2014 for two years and then returned in 2020 until 2022.

The Spanish striker has scored 35 goals in 130 Serie A appearances, but during the 2023-24 campaign he netted 21 times in 48 games with Atletico.
