Serbian Srdjan Jovanovic has been chosen to officiate Atalanta’s Europa League match against Bayer Leverkusen, with England’s Chris Kavanagh as the VAR.

The first leg of the Round of 16 tie kicks off in Bergamo on Thursday at 20.00 GMT.

UEFA have assigned Jovanovic to officiate the match, with Uros Stojkovic and Milan Mihajlovic as his assistants, plus fourth official Novak Simovic.

There will be an all-English team in the VAR booth, though, with Kavanagh aided by Stuart Attwell.

Jovanovic will turn 36 next month and this will be his second Europa League match of the season, although he also officiated four Champions League fixtures.

These included Chelsea beating Juventus 4-0 in November 2021, while in the Conference League he oversaw Roma’s 3-0 victory over Trabzonspor in August.

His record with Italian teams at club and international level, including youth teams, is of five wins, one draw and three defeats, but it will be his first match involving Atalanta.

It’s Jovanovic’s debut with Bayer Leverkusen too, though his German record is three wins, two draws and two defeats.
