Former Milan and Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos admits Riccardo Calafiori’s suspension will give Switzerland an advantage today and feels the battle between Granit Xhaka and Nicolò Barella will determine the outcome.

Ex-Switzerland international Senderos released an interview with Tuttosport newspaper to preview today’s EURO 2024 match between his national team and Italy.

Calafiori is suspended and will be replaced by Gianluca Mancini.

Senderos admits ban for Italy defender gives advantage to Switzerland

“Calafiori has impressed me, and his suspension is an advantage for us,” said Senderos.

“He has improved so much since last year when he was playing at Basel. Now, he brings the ball forward with the confidence of a veteran despite being in his first appearances with the national team. Bastoni is no longer a surprise, he’s been playing at high levels with Inter for years. He has quality and personality.

“I’ve read a lot of criticism, but I’ve seen a good Italy,” continued the ex-defender.

“They played well against Albania and even against Croatia. If they qualify for the next round, they can certainly go all the way to the end.”

But what should the Azzurri fear about Switzerland?

“The way they play, we try to dominate proceedings, like against Germany. Tactically, we are all very solid in all departments,” Senderos replied.

Senderos praises Inter star Sommer

Yann Sommer and Manuel Akanji are among the leaders of the Swiss team.

“We are talking about two top players. You know Sommer well. He was the best in Serie A with Inter,” said Senderos.

“Manuel is a champion and it’s no coincidence that he’s the defensive pillar of a top side like Manchester City. Don’t underestimate Schar and Rodriguez, who have been protagonists for years in the Premier League and Serie A.”

Which will be the key battle today?

“Xhaka is fundamental. If he plays as we know, we can get great results. I’m intrigued by the battle in the middle of the pitch. Whoever prevails will probably go to the next round,” concluded the ex-defender.
