Leonardo Semplici said SPAL “certainly needed a game like this against a great team like Atalanta” after the shock 2-1 victory in Bergamo.
The club from Ferrara not only came back from an early Josip Ilicic goal to get their first Serie A win away to Atalanta since 1966, they also clawed themselves off the foot of the table.
Now SPAL have 15 points, alongside Brescia, leaving Genoa bottom on 14.

“We certainly needed a game like this against a great team like Atalanta,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“We’d already done well last week in Florence and absolutely did not deserve to lose then, so we feel as if we’ve recovered something tonight.
“The first half of the season had a lot of mistakes, we knew it was going to be tough and we didn’t give the fans what they were looking for, but we hope to turn it around.
“We had so many difficulties, from injuries to errors, but we never lost our confidence and I must thank these lads for giving their all in every game.
“I always said we have the quality to emerge from this situation.”
SPAL are said to be in negotiations with Torino to take both Iago Falque and Kevin Bonifazi.
“They are two excellent players who would be of great use to us. We’ve known Kevin for years, Iago is someone we faced many times. We brought in Bryan Dabo and hope to make the squad even more competitive to achieve our objective.”
