Leonardo Semplici was sacked by Cagliari yesterday and said he didn’t have ‘the opportunity to train the complete squad’ at any point.

The former SPAL coach replaced Eusebio Di Francesco at the Sardegna Arena last season and helped string together a run towards safety in Serie A.

However, Cagliari only picked up one point in their first three games this term and have decided to part ways with Semplici.

Walter Mazzarri has arrived in Sardinia, looking to replace Semplici at the helm and the former coach believes the Casteddu have a great season ahead.

“It has been a privilege for me to represent these colours and this land,” Semplici wrote on Instagram. “Great is the regret of not having had the opportunity to continue working with my team.

“I’m used to being judged for the results but in this case, I haven’t had the opportunity to train the complete squad even once.

“I’m convinced that with the newly arrived grafters, Cagliari will have a very satisfying season ahead.

“As for me, I’m proud of having obtained, with my lads, a historic result and indelible love for this land. Forza Casteddu!”
