The Spallini had started the season so strongly, but are now on a run of four consecutive defeats and visit on-form Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

With this in mind, and Andrea Petagna not 100 per cent fit, Semplici is considering some changes.

“Petagna is a player with unique characteristics. We’ll evaluate the situation one game at a time, but this season the squad has more depth, so the lads will know to be ready when called upon.

“If one of them doesn’t play, it is not necessarily a criticism or cutting them out of future matches. I consider Alberto Paloschi to be a starter, as are Gabriele Moncini and Sergio Floccari. It’s possible anyone could be in the starting XI.”

However, Jasmin Kurtic, Federico Viviani and Johan Djourou didn’t make the trip due to injury, with captain Dias Felipe suspended in defence.

“We are taking on a strong team, one that is coming off wins both in Serie A and the Champions League. It’s the same situation as with Inter and we did very well against them, so must try for the perfect performance.

“Roma are one of the best sides in Serie A and very dangerous on set plays.”

SPAL squad for Roma: Gomis, Milinkovic-Savic, Poluzzi; Bonifazi, Cionek, Simic, Vicari; Costa, Dickmann, Everton, Fares, Lazzari, Missiroli, Schiattarella, Valdifiori, Valoti, Vitale; Antenucci, Floccari, Moncini, Paloschi, Petagna
