They were without a win since October 5 and rooted to the foot of the table, but the comeback to beat 10-man Toro 2-1 allowed them to leapfrog Genoa.

“I have to give the credit to my lads. I told them we’d get a result today after a period where all sorts of things were going wrong, including injuries and our mistakes, I saw everyone really wanted to get out of this situation,” the coach told DAZN.

“We put in a strong performance in every sense and this victory must give us confidence going forward.”

There had been reports over the last few weeks that Semplici would be sacked, but the fact he took them to promotion from Serie C to the top flight kept him in his job.

“It’s natural that when results don’t come, a coach will be questioned, but we believe in this group. I think setbacks can happen on a journey like ours and we mustn’t think negative.

“I told the players we had hit rock bottom and it was up to us to react. That’s what happened tonight. SPAL don’t give in, that’s the objective. We haven’t been able to prove ourselves yet this season, but the quality is there and if we play like we did this evening, we can do great things.”
