Sunderland’s Italy international Emanuele Giaccherini is out for the rest of the season.
The attacking midfielder aggravated an existing ankle problem and will be on the sidelines for around 12 weeks.
“He is practically going to be out until the end of the season which is unfortunate for us, but we wish him well,” said manager Gus Poyet.
“I want to say a full recovery – not a quick one – so that we can count on him next year.”

The new setback occurred during their FA Cup win over Fulham earlier this month.
It’s a heavy blow for the 29-year-old, who had just four starts this season after a groin injury and the ankle issue.
