Giovanni Trapattoni believes ‘it’s not absolute fantasy’ for Inter to target the Scudetto this season.

The 76-year-old won Serie A with the Nerazzurri in 1989, and though he doesn’t see them as favourites, the former Italy CT wouldn’t rule out the title this year.

“It’s not absolute fantasy to think about winning the League,” Trapattoni told FcInterNews.

“I’ve been there during my career. When you’re winning and doing well every game then your conviction increases and you grow in confidence.

“Obviously though, the final outcome will depend on a lot of factors.

“I think Milan are more of a team, while [Inter Coach Roberto] Mancini is still trying to get the best out of all the individual pieces he has. However, I don’t think they’re far away from the end of this process.

“The [Derby della Madonnina] result will give the team confidence, that’s for sure. I think Inter will be competing with the other big teams, with Juventus, who have only taken one point so far and are already chasing.”

Il Trap then gave his assessment of Sunday’s derby, and believes a draw would have been a fairer outcome than the Nerazzurri’s 1-0 win.

“I think in terms of play, Milan offered more. If I had to put it in boxing terms, I’d say Milan won on points, 51 to 49, but football is different thing.

“It was a very good match, I saw two teams playing good football who both wanted to win. Overall it was a good derby.

“Then, of course, there was some great play, and [Fredy] Guarin’s goal was a great strike.”

With Joao Miranda injured, midfielder Gary Medel was preferred to Andrea Ranocchia in central defence, something which Trapattoni can understand.

“Mancini sees his players every day, and knows them well,” the former Ireland manager pointed out.

“I think the Chilean [Medel] is suitable for the role, and in a well-organised team he can play as a central defender.

“I agree with the choice, I like him [Medel] because he’s never on the back foot, he always looks to take the initiative.

“Should Ranocchia leave? It depends very much in his character If he has the strength to fight for his place then then maybe he could stay, otherwise it’s better to leave.

“I’d change team as long as I had guarantees from my possible next Coach.”
