Schmidt: ‘Benfica ready to exploit Juventus’ weaknesses’

Benfica coach Roger Schmidt was ready for a tough Champions League clash against Juventus tomorrow, highlighting their experience and tradition.

The Portuguese outfit picked up an impressive 2-1 win away to the Bianconeri last month, a result they’ll be hoping to follow up with another strong performance at home tomorrow. Benfica currently sit second in Group H, five points ahead of Juventus, so a draw would be enough to book their spot in the knock-out stages.

Speaking in a press conference, Schmidt first discussed what kind of match he’s expecting against Juventus tomorrow.

“It was a difficult match even there in Turin, then we played a good match. Now it’s a new game, we were focused on the 90 minutes, then we found the right game plan. The situation is clear, we have a small advantage but everyone can still qualify.

“Juventus are Juventus, they have big players, a great squad, they want to go forward. We expect the best Juventus and we are ready to play our best football, we have to think about doing well these 90 minutes.’

He touched on what he’s expecting from his Benfica squad.

“We have to play a very good game, the group has a very clear situation. But we have to be focused, the goal will only be on the pitch, brave. With the fans on our side, that’s an advantage. We want to make them happy, we want to be in the Champions League next year.”

The Benfica coach gave his thoughts on Juventus and their current level.

“They have experience, tradition, they are used to being on this level. We expect the best Juventus and we have to be ready to exploit their weaknesses. It’s a difficult group and we must not underestimate their commitments.”

Finally, Schmidt commented on the injury crisis affecting the Bianconeri.

“Absences are always heavy, for everyone. Sometimes it happens to us too, but in modern football we are used to it. We have to find solutions and so will Juventus.”

Benfica have looked dominant this season and still remain undefeated after 10 games, sitting top of the Primeira Liga. Their last outing was a tight 1-0 away win over rivals Porto.
