Milan President Paolo Scaroni reiterates the San Siro projects are fraught with difficulty, so building a new venue in San Donato is ‘the number one priority.’

Their Serie A match against Venezia kicks off at San Siro at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

The President revealed he had hospital treatment for kidney stones, but did not want to miss the match and therefore had to be in the stands.

Scaroni reacts to Milan stadium developments

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza has been at the centre of controversy over the last few days, with Inter and Milan announcing they would reject the WeBuild plan to restructure the arena.

This leaves them with the possibility of either building their own stadiums outside the city, or going back to the 2019 plan of constructing a new arena in the current car park, then knocking the old venue down.

“We have 70,000 fans here tonight and I thank the fans who never let their support go missing during the most difficult moments,” Scaroni told Milan TV.

“There was a meeting with the Mayor of Milan the other day, we explained to him that the restructuring idea is not possible, as the result would never be of the level that the two Milanese clubs deserve.

“There is the possibility of going back to the old San Siro project, my old dream, but it is a journey with difficulties and nothing can be taken for granted. We are looking at it, but the number one priority for us is San Donato.

“We are very clear that the San Donato project is continuing and currently the option that we prefer,” concluded President Scaroni.

While Inter have purchased land in Rozzano to build their own stadium, Milan are focusing on the San Donato Milanese area.

Both are suburbs of the city, so would inevitably require fresh infrastructure to get thousands of fans travelling to it for matches.
