Milan President Paolo Scaroni claims he didn't expect the Rossoneri to be Scudetto contenders and provides updates on Gigio Donnarumma's contract extension.

The Rossoneri are the Serie A table leaders, enjoying a five-point lead over second-placed Inter and Sassuolo.

“I’ve followed the developments of the team, step by step. We areon the right path,” Scaroni told GR Parlamento on Monday.

“The journey is not over yet, we haven’t included the Scudetto or a Champions League qualification in this season’s budget so I don’t pronounce these words. We didn’t expect these targets but if we reach them I’ll be happy.

“This is a fantastic moment. It's amazing to be table leaders but we need to keep our feet on the ground. The players and the coach are doing it, we are optimistic about the future.

“I didn’t expect such performances, I knew we could do better than last season because or project needed time.

“Elliott have invested so much during these years, there are no short-term programs, I feel reassured that the Elliott fund will continue to be on our side.

“We have the youngest team in Europe, our secret is the strategy of [Ivan] Gazidis and [Paolo] Maldini. We need to build a team that would win and be economically sustainable.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is out of action with an injury but he continues to be a crucial player for the Rossoneri also on the sidelines.

“He is more than a player, he is an icon of today’s football. It’s a success that Milan continue to do well also without him. I don’t know when he will be back, this kind of injury requires at least a month but he could surprise us, given his physical strength.

Gigio Donnarumma’s contract expires in June but the goalkeeper said on Sunday he’d like to stay at the club.

“I am not following negotiations directly,” Scaroni said.

“However, I am happy to hear he loves Milan. I can only say we feel the same, when two parties love each other as we do, there are all the conditions to go ahead together."
