Milan President Paolo Scaroni insists the Stadio Meazza in San Siro ‘can’t be refurbished’ so the Rossoneri and Inter must look elsewhere for their new stadium.

Milan have identified the area of La Maura, less than two kilometres from the Stadio Meazza, for their new arena. At the same time, Inter want to remain at San Siro, building a new stadium with their city rivals, close to the Stadio Meazza, which would be demolished.

Scaroni spoke about the matter during an event in Milan, attended by Milannews who reported quotes from the Rossoneri President.

“Why is it not possible to refurbish San Siro? What are you talking about? It’s old and obsolete,” he said.

“Have you ever seen modern stadiums? Milan and Inter play many games and how is it possible to refurbish a stadium where games are played once every three or four days with at least 50,000 fans attending?

“Furthermore, there isn’t a stadium close to Milano where the two teams can play while works are ongoing. This is why San Siro can’t be refurbished. I believe this debate is incredible, and we must go beyond this phase.

“New stadiums must be full of people and nice to see. Even a stadium has a key role in TV rights. Milan have 500 million fans worldwide and I want a Milan fan in Shanghai to watch Milan-Inter because he has fun.

“We should do like in the Premier League. Stadiums are part of the show, and that’s the only way to get income and make our football competitive.”

Scaroni went on to explain the changes made by RedBird Capital Partners and their plans for the future.

“Having an American owner means we have to translate our habits, which is not easy. I struggle to explain the Italian dynamics related to stadiums to those not accustomed to them,” he said.

“Elliott became Milan’s owner because they had lent money to the previous majority shareholder. Then, they relied on professionals to bring economic balance and they accomplished it in an unexpected way, especially for sporting results.

“Now, there is a new phase with professionals working in the club and helping us. We are looking to the future with optimism. In football, there are two mountains to climb: sporting and financial results. They are connected and we need to find the balance.

“I had no merit for the title, we won it thanks to people working on it. Financially, we did well.”
