Atalanta and Italy saw worrying scenes as Gianluca Scamacca was carried off with a potentially serious knee injury just days ahead of the European Super Cup against Real Madrid.
It happened during this evening’s pre-season friendly test against newly-promoted Serie A side Parma.
The centre-forward went to gather a ball over the top as the Parma goalkeeper rushed off the line and seemed to catch his studs in the turf, falling awkwardly.
It immediately seemed to be serious and he held on to the outside of his left knee, suggesting at best it is a sprain, at worst possible ligament damage.
The Italy international was carried off by medical staff and will have tests, but the initial reports are concerning.
Atalanta are due to open their season with the prestigious European Super Cup against Real Madrid on August 14.
They qualified for that as Europa League winners against the holders of the Champions League.
