Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni confirms Julian Alvarez could replace Lautaro Martinez in Tuesday’s game against Bolivia, so Inter hope El Toro will be rested ahead of the upcoming derby against Milan.
Lautaro started for Argentina in their 1-0 win over Ecuador on Friday, but the defending World Cup champions have another game before the end of the September international break.
They’ll meet Bolivia away on Tuesday but Inter hope their star striker Lautaro Martinez will be rested ahead of Saturday when the Nerazzurri face Milan in the derby della Madonnina.
“More or less, I have already decided on the starting XI. It will be similar to the one of the other day [against Ecuador], unless problems emerge,” Argentina coach Scaloni said at a press conference as quoted by Calciomercato.com.
“If nothing happens, I will make just a few changes. Angel Di Maria and Julian Alvarez can play, but I’ll decide on the morning of the game.”
Lautaro has been a key player for Inter this season having scored five goals in the opening three Serie A games of 2023-24.
He was named Inter’s captain following Samir Handanovic’s exit this past June and his contract at the Stadio Meazza expires in June 2026. Lautaro joined Inter from Racing Club in a €25m deal in 2018 and has scored 107 goals in 241 appearances with the Serie A giants.
