Sassuolo have confirmed that midfielder Pedro Obiang is suffering from bronchopulmonary issues and is not cleared for training.

The player underwent tests at the Policlinico Universitario di Modena hospital, where doctors identified a bronchopulmonary outbreak of a viral nature.

As a precaution, the club statement notes that Obiang will not be allowed to train or play football, but it’s not clear how long that will be the situation.

This news comes just days after his Sassuolo teammate Gregoire Defrel tested positive for COVID-19.

Obiang is 29 years old and was born and raised in Spain, but plays his international football for Equatorial Guinea, where he has three goals in 11 caps.

His previous clubs were Sampdoria and West Ham United before moving to Sassuolo in a deal worth €7.25m in the summer of 2019.

He is under contract with the Neroverdi until June 2023 and made 33 Serie A appearances last season, contributing one assist.
