For their new beginning in Serie A, Sassuolo rented use of Reggio Emilia’s largest stadium, Stadio Citta del Tricolore, in 2013. Having previously occupied Modena’s Stadio Alberto Braglia, the Neroverdi signed a two-year contract with Lega Pro side Reggiana to share the 20,000 capacity venue. In December 2013, club patron Giorgio Squinzi bought over the stadium and introduced principal sponsor Mapei to its name.
With a distinct English architectural influence about the arena arising from a sheltered grandstand and the proximity of fans to the pitch, home attendances reached up to 13,000, as Sassuolo hosted some of Italy’s biggest names for the first time in its history.
Whilst there are commercial and recreational facilities nearby, including a shopping centre, support for the League minnows remained just as strong and vociferous throughout the 2013-14 and 2014-15 campaigns. The stadium lies just 2.5km from the city centre – a half-hour walk or 10 minute taxi ride from the Reggio Emilia railway station, part of the bustling Milan-Bologna line.
