Sassuolo have reportedly identified 2006 World Cup winner Fabio Grosso as their ideal candidate to replace Alessio Dionisi in the event that the current Neroverdi head coach is relieved of his duties in the coming weeks.

Dionisi is under mounting pressure in Emilia-Romagna after recording three consecutive losses in Serie A. Those include a 3-0 hammering from Juventus, a 1-0 defeat away to Monza and the recent 4-2 loss against Thiago Motta’s Bologna at the weekend.

Sassuolo currently find themselves in 15th in the league table, coincidentally the same position that they were in after 23 games last season. They are, however, five points worse off than they were at the same stage in 2022-23.

According to Tuesday’s reports from TMW, Sassuolo’s next game against Torino on Saturday evening will be crucial for Dionisi’s future. Put simply, the coach cannot afford to lose again if he wishes to stay in his job beyond the end of this week.

Sky Sport Italia are reporting that Sassuolo have several options in mind if they are to part ways with Dionisi in the near future.

The frontrunner is Grosso, who is currently available after a short-lived experiment with his former club Lyon in Ligue 1 earlier this season.

Though his return to France was a period to forget on a personal level, Grosso showed great promise in leading Frosinone to the Serie B title in 2022-23.

Sassuolo have also reportedly looked at both Davide Ballardini and Leonardo Semplici, who have both been out of work since their departures from Cremonese and Spezia respectively in 2023.
