Sassuolo have been eliminated from the Coppa Italia in the first round after they suffered a surprise 3-2 loss to Serie B side Modena.

Alessio Dionisi started a strong first team squad for this evening’s cup clash, with stars like Giacomo Raspadori, Domenico Berardi and Davide Frattesi all appearing in the starting 11, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the second tier side, who held onto their early advantage.

Modena quickly found a two goal lead in Emilia-Romagna, going 2-0 up after only 30 minutes thanks to Diego Falcinelli and Nicola Mosti. Berardi managed to claw one back before half time thanks to a last minute penalty, setting up a tense second half.

The Serie B didn’t crumble under the pressure after the break and even took a 3-1 lead after 52 minutes thanks to Mosti’s second goal. Sassuolo fought to respond and controlled possession throughout the second half, but it wasn’t enough, with Kaan Ayhan only managing to bag a consolation goal in the 88th minute.

The Neroverdi will be looking at the defeat as a wakeup call ahead of their Serie A opener against Juventus on August 15.
