Reports are growing that Sassuolo are preparing to sack coach Alessio Dionisi, with Fabio Grosso, Davide Ballardini and Leonardo Semplici among the candidates to take over.
The Neroverdi had been adamant they would not turn on their tactician, but the situation is becoming increasingly dire.
They twice scrambled back into the game this afternoon only to eventually lose 3-2 at home to fellow relegation strugglers Empoli.
That result leaves them level on 20 points with Hellas Verona in the bottom four, and while they have been able to beat Inter and Juventus, they dropped points against teams who on paper are inferior.
Multiple sources now suggest Dionisi will be fired over the weekend, but the club has not yet agreed on a replacement.
Calciomercato.it pointed to former Frosinone and Olympique Lyonnais coach Grosso, but Sky Sport Italia consider old hands like Ballardini and Semplici to be more suited to the role at Sassuolo.
Dionisi has been at the Mapei Stadium since the summer of 2021, having previously trained Venezia and Empoli.
His record this season in Serie A is of just five wins, five draws and 15 defeats.
