Sassuolo draw on Euro debut

Domenico Berardi’s penalty handed Sassuolo a draw on their debut in European competition.

The Neroverdi fell behind early on to Swiss side Luzern in their Europa League third qualifying round tie first leg, but recovered to score a valuable away goal.

Marco Schneuwly’s strike for the hosts was cancelled out by Berardi’s 42nd minute spot-kick, giving Eusebio Di Francesco's team a narrow advantage ahead of the return match.

As well as Berardi, Sassuolo were indebted to goalkeeper Andrea Consigli, who saved a second half penalty to keep the scores level.

The second leg of the tie will take place next Thursday at the Stadio Reggio Emilia.
