Maurizio Sarri has said that finishing second with Lazio is among the best achievements in his career and that finishing as runners up in Serie A this season is ‘more difficult’ than it would have been to win the Europa League with Juventus

The former Juve, Napoli and Chelsea coach spoke to the media shortly after his current side put two past Empoli on Saturday to secure their position as the second ranked side in Italy for the 2022-23 season.

During his post-match press conference, Sarri admitted that he had not expected Lazio to finish quite as high as they did, but that his team were efficient in taking advantage of some of the other sides’ misfortunes this year.

“I didn’t expect second place,” Sarri said, before continuing: “but I wanted to improve on last year’s position. We knew it wouldn’t be easy.

“Then, some teams scored fewer points than expected and we were good at taking advantage of that. I want to applaud the team because they played very well in our last training session.”

Sarri then went on to claim that Lazio’s achievements this season were harder to achieve than winning the Europa League with Juventus, before insisting that he still intends on leading Lazio to further success before moving on from the Stadio Olimpico.

He said: “I think it’s more difficult to finish second with Lazio than to win the Europa League with Juventus. Maybe Napoli had an easier journey comparatively, very few difficulties came up . Here, on the other hand, the journey has been long and I hope there is room to go even further.”
