Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri highlighted his issues with modern football, complaining about the packed match schedule.

The World Cup in Qatar this winter has forced leagues around Europe to alter their schedules and take a six-week break, squeezing in a large number of matches to play before the tournament kicks off. Italian clubs competing in European competition have played a match every three or four days for months now and injuries are starting to pile up.

Speaking to RSI Sport, Sarri first spoke about the issues he has with modern football.

“Football must be saved from itself and its institutions. We are going down a road where it is impossible to show beauty. Having to play 60 to 70 matches a year leads players to train less and produce a less spectacular game.

“We are at a time when sport has become business, where appearance counts more. It’s ridiculous.”

He then commented on if the money he earns in football is immoral.

“It’s as immoral as the world today. If an actor gets €30m for a film it is immoral, but then the earnings justify it. I think it’s unfair, but it’s part of today’s world.”

In the next four weeks, top teams like Napoli, Milan, Juventus and Inter will play seven matches before Serie A pauses on November 14. Clubs will then use the break to train the non-competing players, with many planning training camps and setting up friendlies.

  1. He can blame his former profession on this. They helped create a corporate consumer and money driven culture (the Bankers did). When money is all that matters this occurs
