Sarri: ‘Focus on Napoli play’

Napoli Coach Maurizio Sarri believes his team has been unfairly criticised – “it annoys me when you only talk about the result”.

The Partenopei have gone three games without a win in Serie A, a run which has seen them fall three points behind defending champions Juventus.

“It annoys me when you only talk about the result, not the play,” Sarri chided journalists in his pre-Chievo Press conference.

“With the same type of game we played in Turin [a 1-0 defeat to Juventus], if it had finished 0-0 the comments would have been different.

“It’s part of the game, people have to sell papers, be seen on TV. The commentators do a good job, throw mud and then a week later no-one remembers.

“Juventus are tough, solid and physical but they also have quality, and that’s why they get results. Then I’m also happy that the Lega called our game with Fiorentina the best of the year.

“I hope sooner or later a team like that [Fiorentina or Napoli] can win the League because I really enjoyed it in Florence.”

The Vesuviani are now out of both the Coppa Italia and the Europa League, will that benefit them in Serie A?

“If it brings any benefits we’ll see them next week. We came back on Tuesday this week and the first few days we took it easy, it’s only after that we got back to regular training.

“We’ll see more mental benefits, it’s harder to recharge the mental batteries than the physical ones.

“Week-by-week we’ll use guys based on who is doing better, because tiredness won’t be a factor.

“Could Nathaniel Chalobah play tomorrow? Chalobah has gone through a hard time [the death of his mother] and has missed a lot of training sessions.

“We put the human aspect first, because he’s gone through a tragedy. He’s training with us now, and in Florence he went to warm-up and I thought about putting him on.”

The Coach was praised by club legend Diego Maradona this week, but insisted he never actually read the quotes.

“You’ve caught me off guard, I don’t read [the papers] to stay calm, and that’s the truth!” Sarri claimed.

“I’ve said it before, just him saying the word ‘Sarri’ fills me with pride, so if he spoke well of me then it’s gratifying.

“I hope to meet him when he comes to Italy.”
