Maurizio Sarri explains what went wrong at the start against Empoli and how Lazio got back on track for a 3-1 win. ‘We went too deep and that is extremely dangerous.’

Empoli 1-3 Lazio: Sarri’s Aquile ride luck

The Biancocelesti got off to a dire start, falling behind after four minutes, but turned it around through Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Manuel Lazzari and a Ciro Immobile penalty.

“We are still a work in progress and faced a difficult Empoli side. I was afraid in the first 20 minutes that we’d really struggle, but we did well for 65 minutes,” Sarri told Sky Sport Italia.

“We went too deep the first couple of attacks and that is extremely dangerous, which is why we conceded with a through run. This is a team that has quality upfront, so these problems were to be expected.

“It’s important that we came away with a win, but clearly we need to do better. Lazzari is working hard at becoming a full-back and he’s improving defensively.”

Inevitably, Sarri was asked if he could bring some of his Napoli to this Lazio side.

“There are very few similarities between the squads in terms of characteristics, but they do share a great deal in personality. These lads follow their coach in an extraordinary way and that’s what I experienced at Napoli too.

“Mind you, this Lazio side spent the last few years with a totally different style of football, so it could take a while longer to adapt.”

It was special also for Sarri to debut at the Stadio Castellani, having started his Serie A career at Empoli.

“I owe so much to President Fabrizio Corsi. I hope that Empoli have a great season.”
