Santos want to bring back Gabriel Barbosa, reports in Brazil suggest, but Inter would have to pay most of his wages.

The striker joined the Nerazzurri for €33.5m in the summer of 2016, but failed to make a single Serie A start and scored just one goal.

That saw the Brazilian, who is known as Gabigol, loaned to Benfica for the season, but aside from two cup appearances he’s managed just 43 minutes between the league and Champions League.

It’s widely expected that the Portuguese side will send him back to Italy in January, but there’s no place for him in Luciano Spalletti’s squad.

One idea was to send him to Jiangsu Suning, who share owners with the Nerazzurri, but the forward isn’t keen to move to China.

Now Globoesporte is reporting that Santos, from whom Inter bought Gabigol in the first place, are keen to having him back.

The 21-year-old has already made it clear that he’d be willing to go back, but a deal would have to be found whereby the Beneamata pay most of his wages.

In addition, there is a complication with the Presidential situation.

Modesto Roma had planned to announced Gabigol after winning the recent elections, but he was defeated by José Carlos Peres.

It’s now up to Peres to decide if he wants to pursue the striker, as well as former Milan man Robinho.

Roma wanted Robinho too, but it’s thought Peres is not keen to sign him with a conviction for rape hanging over him.

The 33-year-old has been convicted by an Italian court of a gang rape in Milan in 2013.

Under Italian law, a person is not definitively guilty until all levels of appeals have been exhausted, but Peres wants Robinho to clear his name.

While he has been sentenced to nine years in prison, the striker can’t actually be extradited to Italy under the rules of the Brazilian constitution.
