Santos President José Carlos Peres admits it’s “very difficult” for Gabriel Barbosa’s loan to be renewed, as Inter don’t want to lose any more on him.

The Brazilian signed for the Nerazzurri for a total of €33.5m in 2016, and is under contract until June 2021.

He failed to make a single Serie A start, scoring only once, and after a failed loan spell at Benfica he was loaned back to Santos.

That deal expires in January, and it appears it will not be renewed.

“Gabriel was sold to Inter for about €30m and he signed for five years,” Peres told O Globo.

“The Chinese who own Inter have already declared that they’ve lost a quarter of that figure which they can’t get back because there are only three years on his contract.

“They don’t want to lose more money, so it [a new loan] is difficult, very difficult.

“Everything is possible, the parties will keep talking and Santos will always try to be the player’s first choice.”
