Davide Santon warns Inter’s Europa League struggles are down to “attitude, not quality” ahead of the Southampton match.

The Nerazzurri have lost both of their opening fixtures in the competition, going down to Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Sparta Prague.

Tomorrow sees Claude Puel’s Saints visit San Siro in what is already a crucial match for the home side.

“I think the main thing is the attitude we take onto the pitch,” Santon explained, sitting alongside Coach Frank de Boer in the pre-match Press conference.

“I think we have a strong squad this season, but in a lot of games we’ve lacked the right attitude. In the Europe League we’ve conceded goals, not because of the quality of the players but because we didn’t go onto the pitch with the right attitude, and that can’t happen.

“You can make mistakes, but you can’t lack the right attitude and these things make a special difference in Europe. You have to be focused until the 90th minute.”

Sunday saw the Beneamata lost at home to Cagliari, in a tense atmosphere provoked by the Mauro Icardi controversy.

“On Sunday there was definitely a bit of a strange atmosphere, but I don’t think that’s why we lost. In home games it’s obvious you always want the support of the fans, and it came as always.

“I don’t think the stadium is the problem, maybe the problem is us because we controlled the match on Sunday, maybe not creating much but giving nothing away.

“After we managed to make the breakthrough we lost our positions a bit and we had fear. That can’t happen, because we’re Inter and have to be able to control a game for longer than 60 or 70 minutes, especially at home.

“I think that we can get out of this situation by forgetting what happened on Sunday, aside from analysing the good and bad things we did.

“Tomorrow we can’t go onto the pitch thinking about Cagliari, but playing this game knowing that it’s important to get three points.

“The first two games didn’t go the way we wanted, so we have to concentrate, knowing that tomorrow will be a crucial match to progress in Europe.”
