The former Watford boss has been appointed as successor to Fabrizio Castori, who was dismissed after just six Serie A games.

“This is an important time for Carpi,” Sannino told assembled media as he was officially presented.

“I’m here in place of someone who led this club into history. I understand that it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, but it’s part of our job.

“I know Fabrizio well, we’ve followed the same path. Now I’m here, the club called me and we have to take the plunge.

“We’re in a situation where, beyond sentiment and disappointment, you can tell that the table just requires us to work.

“The team has to be encouraged, they have the feeling which comes with being in last place. The goal is to stay in this League and continue this story for the fans, the town and the President.

“I was asked to lead this team, and I want to become the leader of this squad. We’re approaching the next game [Torino at home], which will be very important and we want to take some points.

“With sacrifice, sweat and a few words we’ll get out of this situation. There are a lot of games ahead, with the team united on a common path to get points which will give us fuel for the rest of the season.

“I’m not a magician, I can’t read the future, and we have three days to prepare for a game against second-place Torino.

“The international break will give me the opportunity to learn more about the team, and get an impression of what I think the lads can give me.

“I know I’m under the magnifying glass in what is a bit of a disappointing situation. I’m a professional, my job is to do my best.

“This is a major challenge, which has difficulties, but because of that trying to win will be even more satisfying. I’m not going to talk about numbers, but attitude.

“In three days I’m not going to totally overhaul what has been done so far. My job is to give them [the players] as much certainty as possible.

“I’ll try to figure out how we can make fewer mistakes, but I’m not going to get into their heads and inundate them with tactical instructions. You need a two-month pre-season to do that.

“We have to know within ourselves that we can beat teams, even if they’re favourites, with character and physical and mental strength.

“Our home for these matches must be our fortress, and we need the support of the fans for that, and indeed I’ve seen that so far.

“Every player must give his all to earn his place, there’s nothing guaranteed. Everyone will get his chance. Whoever proves they are ready to play will get the chance to.”
