Just hours after Inter joined Milan in locking down land outside the city for a new stadium, the local authorities confirm the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza cannot be knocked down.
The two clubs had lost patience with the wait for a new arena in the San Siro area, which was meant to be built in the car part of the current stadium.
After that, the original stadium would be knocked down, but that is not going to be possible, because the structure has been given the protected status usually reserved to historic buildings.
The Milan Council released a statement this evening confirming there will be a protection order placed on the stadium.
It also came out against the idea, which comes from Government sources above them, noting it will be devastating for the future of football in the city of Milan.
“If confirmed, the decision would have serious consequences not only for the future of the stadium and its economic sustainability, but also vastly reduce the possibility the teams will remain in Milan with a new stadium.”
Inter today locked down land in the Rozzano area of the Milanese hinterland, while Milan had already booked space in San Donato Milanese.
