Gonzalo Villar is edging closer to a loan move to Sampdoria but a deal must still be closed out with Roma.

The 24-year-old Spanish midfielder was not included in Jose Mourinho’s plans last year and he remained sidelined domestically, only making appearances in the Europa Conference League. After a tough first half of the season, Villar joined Getafe on loan, where he found a little more consistency.

As reported by TuttoMercatoWeb, Sampdoria have made significant steps forward in recent days as they look to sign Villar on loan, with the player open to a move to Liguria. The ball is now in Roma’s court, who will take a few days to decide if they’d rather look for a definitive sale elsewhere instead.

The Spanish midfielder joined Roma in January 2020 from Elche in a deal worth around €5m. He’s made 64 appearances for the Giallorossi since then, providing one assist and struggling to make a strong impression. He’ll be hoping to prove his quality in Liguria should a loan move to Sampdoria come off.
