Sampdoria have been docked two points from the current Serie B season for failing to pay outstanding debts.

The Blucerchiati were relegated from Serie A in bottom place and managed to complete the takeover from Massimo Ferrero to a group led by former Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani last month.

It was during Ferrero’s reign that the deadlines were missed for outstanding debts including the payment of tax and pension contributions in January, February and March 2023.

As expected, today the FIGC tribunal announced that Sampdoria had been docked two points for the 2023-24 Serie B season.

It means Samp will start the season with -2 points in the table.

The tournament is due to kick off next month, although there could be delays because Reggina and Lecco are lodging appeals against their exclusion from the Serie B division.

That might not be the end of the troubles for Sampdoria, as Ferrero is also under investigation as part of the ‘plusvalenze’ scandal involving inflated transfer fees to boost capital gains.

That includes seven transfers between Sampdoria and Juventus from 2019 to 2020, plus the Blucerchiati are also under investigation for how financial assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic was used.
