It has been announced that Salernitana’s Serie A match with Venezia will have to be played after it was called off on January 6 due to a COVID outbreak.
The Disciplinary Commission has now set a precedent and continued along that path, agreeing that the rules at the time allowed for the ASL (local health authority) to over-rule the existing Lega Serie A protocol and order squads into quarantine conditions.
That means the teams will not be penalised with an automatic 3-0 defeat and be docked one point for failing to attend.
This is the second verdict to go in Salernitana’s favour, so they have two games in hand this season that need to be rescheduled against Udinese and Venezia.
Both of these are potentially crucial relegation battles, so their fate is by no means sealed, even if they currently sit bottom of the table.
Other matches that need to be replayed after appeals are Fiorentina-Udinese, Atalanta-Torino and Bologna-Inter.
The COVID protocol changed in January after the clubs worked out a joint plan with the local health authorities, who would only intervene if nine players are positive at the same time.
Injuries, suspensions and other reasons for absentees are not taken into consideration.
