Davide Nicola performed miracles last season to keep Salernitana in Serie A and will face a familiar task this year as his team kicks off at home to Roma. Jose Mourinho has been embraced by the Giallorossi after last year and most Salernitana vs. Roma predictions will surely favour the visiting side.

Salernitana vs. Roma odds

1 – Under 2.5 total goals scored – 11/10

2 – Salernitana under 1.5 total goals – 2/11

3 – Draw after 90 minutes – 15/4

4 – Both teams to score – 19/20

5 – A 1-1 draw – 8/1

When Davide Nicola became the third manager of the season at Salernitana in February it seemed as though even he would not be able to save the Granata from the drop. But he performed his magic once again and – with some help from Cagliari on the last day of the season – ensured that Salernitana would remain in Serie A.

Now he must work out how to keep the club up again. There have been some new arrivals at the club but Nicola looks like he will be putting his trust in last year’s squad on the whole. That includes somehow getting another campaign out of veteran French attacker Franck Ribéry.

Salernitana have already crashed out of the Coppa Italia to Serie B side Parma and will have to pick themselves up for what looks like being a gruelling campaign. Facing Roma on the opening day does not seem like the perfect start.

That’s because Jose Mourinho has the fans in the Eternal City dreaming of further success after claiming the inaugural Europa Conference League title last season. That automatically put Roma in the Europa League group stage for this year, even if they hadn’t finished sixth in Serie A.

Mourinho got the best out of players like Tammy Abraham last year and has brought in an exciting group of new players to push Roma towards the top four. The big news was tempting Paulo Dybala to join from Juventus. But the additions of Georginio Wijnaldum, Zeki Çelik and even Nemanja Matić could be just as important.

Fitting all those new faces into an already impressive starting eleven may well be Mourinho’s biggest headache but he will be confident – as ever – of Roma doing well this season. That should start with a win away at Salernitana on Sunday.

Salernitana vs. Roma line-ups

Salernitana (3-5-2): Sepe; Pirola, Fazio, Mantovani; Sy, Kastonos, Bohinen, Coulibaly, Kachrida; Bonazzoli, Ribéry

Roma (3-4-2-1): Patricio; Ibanez, Smalling, Mancini; Spinazzola, Wijnaldum, Pellegrini, Çelik; Dybala, Zaniolo; Abraham

Salernitana team news

Nicola should look to Bonazzoli for the goals needed to give this Salernitana side a chance here. Ribéry’s ability to last 90 minutes will be a key consideration but the Frenchman is too important to the side to be left out completely.

Roma team news

Roma has made some excellent signings this summer and they have already started to pay off in pre-season. Dybala looks set to become a Stadio Olimpico favourite, while Zaniolo and Abraham will also score goals – and could do so on Sunday.
