Salernitana have sacked Fabio Liverani after just five matches in charge and are set to appoint Stefano Colantuono, their fourth coach of the season.

A formal announcement is expected on Tuesday, but Liverani was informed of his dismissal today.

The club is rock bottom of the Serie A table and almost certainly doomed to relegation.

Liverani was their third coach of the campaign, as Paulo Sousa was dismissed on October 10 after one win, three draws and five defeats in all competition.

Pippo Inzaghi took over and lasted 18 games between Serie A and the Coppa Italia, overseeing three victories, four stalemates and 11 losses.

Liverani was appointed on February 11 and had by far the worst average of the three, earning a single draw against 10-man Udinese and four defeats.

During his tenure, Salernitana scored just three goals and conceded 12.

There were reports that Inzaghi would be recalled, seeing as he is still under contract, but Sportitalia, Tuttomercatoweb and Sky Sport Italia noted that President Danilo Iervolino rejected the request to extend his contract.

They will instead promote Colantuono, who is currently in charge of the youth academy.

Colantuono had previously coached in Serie A with Catania, Perugia, Atalanta, Palermo, Torino and Udinese.

He was the Salernitana head coach from December 2017 to December 2018, then again from October 2021 to February 2022.

The Seahorses are already 11 points adrift of safety with only nine rounds left to play this season.

The team has been wracked by problems, including star striker Boulaye Dia frozen out and sued after refusing to come off the bench.
