Salernitana have been ordered to go into quarantine by the local health authorities after a COVID-19 outbreak, so their game against Venezia will not be played.

Sky Sport Italia report the ASL (local health authority) issued the lockdown order on everyone in the matchday squad, both those who have tested positive and the other players and members of staff who are considered close contacts.

This is because the outbreak has continued to spread within the group, officially reaching nine players yesterday and reportedly rising to 11 today.

That means they will not be allowed to take part in Thursday’s planned Serie A match against Venezia.

Salernitana already had to miss the last game of 2021 against Udinese when the ASL placed a travel ban on the matchday squad.

That was technically not called off by the Lega Serie A, who argued there weren’t enough COVID-19 cases to activate the protocol.

However, the ASL does have the right to over-rule the football authorities and Salernitana are expected to win their appeal to have the match replayed in future.

They have now requested a postponement for Thursday’s Serie A game against Venezia.

This isn’t the only game that could be at risk for January 6, because Verona have eight players testing positive and Udinese seven.
