Rafa Benitez was linked with a return to Napoli, but it is now suggested he’s in talks with Salernitana with Paulo Sousa heading to the Stadio Maradona.

The Spanish coach has been out of work since leaving Everton in January 2022 and has experience of two other Serie A clubs, working at Inter for just 25 matches in 2010, then at Napoli from 2013-15.

Benitez has been in Italy over the last few days and told Sky Sport Italia he is “waiting for an interesting project.”

There were rumours of a potential return to Napoli, but now TuttoSalernitana.com and Sportitalia report that it is Salernitana who have contacted the veteran.

It seems as if Benitez has not closed the door yet on the proposal and is waiting for more information.

The two stories cross over, because Salernitana might need a new coach after Napoli approached their current boss Sousa.

Luciano Spalletti is taking a sabbatical after winning the Serie A title with Napoli.
