Genoa and Venezia are now relegated, so the final place in Serie B will be decided between Salernitana and Cagliari on the last day of the season.

The Grifone were doomed after today’s 3-0 defeat to Napoli and Cagliari also losing 3-1 at home to Inter.

We go into the final round with Salernitana on 31 points and Cagliari 29.

In Serie A, when two teams finish level on points in the table, their position is decided by head-to-head record.

As it happens, that is totally even between Salernitana and Cagliari, because they drew both matches 1-1.

With the goal difference in head-to-head also totally even, the next factor to divide them will be overall goal difference in the season.

On that score, Salernitana are in trouble, as their goal difference is -41 compared to Cagliari’s -34.

It means that a point might not be enough for Salernitana against Udinese, as if Cagliari in turn beat Venezia at the Stadio Penzo, they will both be on 32 points and the Sardinians stay in Serie A.

Salernitana stay in Serie A if…

  • They beat Udinese
  • Cagliari do not beat Venezia

Cagliari stay in Serie A if…

  • They beat Venezia and Salernitana do not win against Udinese

  1. It’d be nice to see Salertitana stay up now after their recent run. But they’ll probably need to win now.
