Milan legend Arrigo Sacchi has revealed current coach Stefano Pioli ‘surprised’ him and claimed the 54-year-old has been ‘the protagonist’ of the turnaround.

Pioli replaced Marco Giampaolo with the Rossoneri sitting 13th in Serie A and has helped the Diavolo to seventh, two points behind Roma at fifth.

The great run since the resumption in June continued with a thumping 5-1 win against Bologna at San Siro and in July the Diavolo have beaten Lazio and Juvenuts, before keeping Napoli to a 2-2 draw at the San Paolo.

“I have known Stefano for a long time, I have always respected him and thought he’s an excellent person, I felt he was a good coach but not modern,” Sacchi told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Today, he doesn’t just possess the professional and human values of the highest level, he is surprising me through the improvements of his players in a few months and for the ideas that have allowed this transformation.

“Stefano is the great protagonist of this identity that certifies his and his players growth. If he doesn’t stay, he won’t have any problems finding a new job. In any case, he must be proud of what he has done and with his own behaviour.

“They testify his technical and personal greatness.”
